Terremark pushes cloud computing
By Bridget Carey, Miami Herald, April 19, 2010 – When a data center has its head in the cloud, that's a good thing these days. Working in the cloud -- techie jargon for renting computing storage and power from another provider -- is a growing trend in technology. It's of heightened interest to the employees nestled in the 13-story-tall Terremark Worldwide building, capped with large white globes that hide satellite dishes just south of I-395 in downtown Miami.
Praised as a cost saver and feared to be a security risk, cloud computing is not a new product for Terremark, a technology services firm operating 13 data centers in the United States, Europe and Latin America. It's been offering cloud computing since 2008. But the technology has gained momentum in the soft economy, as companies look for cheaper solutions to expand their computing capacity. And data centers like Terremark's are poised to add a wide range of clientele with this flexibly priced technology. ``There's not one enterprise today that doesn't have a cloud strategy,'' said Terremark Chairman and CEO Manuel D. ``Manny'' Medina.

Kundra: Fed Data Centers 7 Percent Utilized
April 9, 2010 – In the past decade, the number of data centers operated by the U.S. government has skyrocketed from 432 to more than 1,200. The agencies building these new facilities must have been adding capacity because they had filled their existing servers and space, right?
Wrong. ”One of the most troubling aspects about the data centers is that in a lot of these cases, we’re finding that server utilization is actually around seven percent,” Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra said Wednesday in an address at the Brookings Institute. That means some agencies have been investing in new data centers instead of tapping the 93 percent of capacity available on their existing servers.

Enterprise Cloud Put To The Test
By Tom Henderson and Brendan Allen, ExtremeLabs, Inc., Network World
The potential benefits of public clouds are obvious to most IT execs, but so are the pitfalls – outages, security concerns, compliance issues, and questions about performance, management, service-level agreements and billing. At this point, it's fair to say that most IT execs are wary of entrusting sensitive data or important applications to the public cloud. But a technology as hyped as cloud computing can't be ignored either. IT execs are exploring the public cloud in pilot programs, they're moving to deploy cloud principles in their own data centers, or they are eyeing an alternative that goes by a variety of names – enterprise cloud, virtual private cloud or managed private cloud.

Cloud Computing Brings Savings in Energy, Maintenance Costs
By Rebecca Neal, Federal Times.com
Agencies are looking at cloud computing for more than just outsourcing their data center operations. They're also exploring how cloud computing — where agencies rent access from another vendor or agency to servers, storage and applications over the Internet, rather than owning and maintaining systems themselves — can help agencies modernize their outdated information technology systems.
The General Services Administration's Office of Citizen Services and Communications has used cloud computing to run usa.gov, the government's main Web site, since May. GSA formerly ran usa.gov off a 10-year old "onerous" system, said David McClure, associate administrator of GSA's Office of Citizen Services and Communications. The system ran on outdated, proprietary software and frequently "acted up" when programmers needed to make updates, he said.
"We had to reboot it all anytime we needed to make a change," he said. Now IT personnel can make changes to the Web site in minutes instead of coding and updating the old system over a series of days, McClure said.
Terremark Federal hosts usa.gov at its secure data center in Culpeper, Va. Terremark uses green technologies that lower energy costs, such as using diesel generators for backup power. When it's cold outside, Terremark pumps naturally chilled water in to cool its data centers, said Bruce Hart, the company's chief operating officer.

How Cybercriminals Invade Social Networks, Companies
By Byron Acohido, USA TODAY
SAN FRANCISCO — "Hey Alice, look at the pics I took of us last weekend at the picnic. Bob"
That Facebook message, sent last fall between co-workers at a large U.S. financial firm, rang true enough. Alice had, in fact, attended a picnic with Bob, who mentioned the outing on his Facebook profile page. So Alice clicked on the accompanying Web link, expecting to see Bob's photos. But the message had come from thieves who had hijacked Bob's Facebook account. And the link carried an infection. With a click of her mouse, Alice let the attackers usurp control of her Facebook account and company laptop. Later, they used Alice's company logon to slip deep inside the financial firm's network, where they roamed for weeks. They had managed to grab control of two servers, and were probing deeper, when they were detected.
Intrusions like this one — investigated by network infrastructure provider Terremark — can expose a company to theft of its most sensitive data. Such attacks illustrate a dramatic shift underway in the Internet underground. Cybercriminals are moving aggressively to take advantage of an unanticipated chink in corporate defenses: the use of social networks in workplace settings. They are taking tricks honed in the spamming world and adapting them to what's driving the growth of social networks: speed and openness of individuals communicating on the Internet.

Tech Trends: Above The Ivory Tower
January/February 2010 (EDTECH MAGAZINE) -- One is on the West Coast in Irvine, Calif.; the other in the East, in Raleigh, N.C. One has its students take all their courses online; the other’s students mainly attend class in lecture halls and classrooms that span 10 colleges. One is 30 years old; the other is 120 years old.
But both have one essential thing in common: They have adopted and adapted cloud-computing environments — the delivery of scalable IT applications, services and infrastructure over the Internet — to serve the day-to-day processing and system demands of their students and faculty. In both instances, technologists at the two universities also embrace a new vision of the IT-user relationship that cloud computing engenders: Ultimate control over the processing environment lies in the hands of the end users.

Cisco's Chambers: Tough Talk on Data Centers
Dec 08, 2009 (BUSINESSWEEK) -- Cisco Systems Chief Executive John Chambers had pointed words for journalists skeptical of his company's foray into equipment for big corporate data centers, an area of technology traditionally dominated by computer makers. "We've taken on big peers in the past," Chambers said over a bento-box lunch for members of the media at Cisco's financial analyst conference on Dec. 8....
...Another Cisco UCS customer is Terremark (TMRK), a hosting company that runs the federal government's USA.gov site, among others. Terremark Chief Strategy Officer Marvin Wheeler says his company will rely on the UCS machines because they will help his company more easily shift jobs between its data centers around the globe—say, to provide disaster-recovery backups. And James McGibney, an IT manager for construction giant Tutor Perini (TPC), says Cisco's technology has helped him consolidate five big data centers into one. He says the company, which had sales of $5.6 billion in 2008, now has just 22 servers, down from 480 in the past. "We've definitely cut our [data center] costs by more than 50%."
